Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4th, 1972. She was also raised by her grandmother and grew up being an all-single child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. While working two jobs and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. She hoped she would become a English high school teacher. This dream was however ended when, after three years of study and being a teachers aide she dropped out of college. When she began her professional career, performing at live poetry performances and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. The two ended up writing You Got Me together. In a Roots show, she revealed herself as an artist. Following that, she started collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She was also able to gain experience on stage as she performed in the Canada tour of the Broadway production Rent. She signed as the label's first artist.
